UK

The Daily Telegraph focused on Boris Johnson’s latest attack on Prime Minister Theresa May. In an op-ed for the paper, Johnson called the PM’s Chequers plan “a disaster,” writing that if negotiations continued on their current path, the U.K. would end up in a “spectacular political car crash” of a Brexit. The Times reported the EU is ready to accept “technological solutions” to minimize customs checks at the Irish border. The paper also wrote that the NHS app endorsed by Health Secretary Matt Hancock last week is still in testing and has been criticized by some doctors for missing serious health problems. The FT reported that Deutsche Bank plans to shift “hundreds of billions of assets” from London to Frankfurt under pressure from the European Central Bank.

Italy

Il Tempo focused on the fallout from a video reportedly secretly recorded by Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini’s team of a clash between the League leader and Luxembourg’s Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn during a meeting on Friday in Vienna. In the video, Asselborn reacted angrily to Salvini implying that Luxembourg wanted “new slaves” from Africa. La Repubblica and Il Giornale concentrated on a media summit in the region of Arcore, attended by Salvini and media mogul and former PM Silvio Berlusconi.

Germany

Frankfurter Allgemeine led with a story on the aftermath of Hurricane Florence in the U.S., writing there was “no land in sight” as floods hit North Carolina. The newspaper also reported that German bishops were “shocked and ashamed” after a study commissioned by the church found that Catholic priests abused thousands of children between 1946 and 2014. Die Welt featured a story on a new study that found there would be a huge increase in the use of robots by 2025.

France

Le Figaro reported that French President Emmanuel Macron was “searching for his strategy” to win back support as he continues to sink in the polls. Regional newspaper La Voix du Nord focused on the weather — Hurricane Florence in the U.S. and Typhoon Mangkhut in Asia. The headline: “When the elements are unchained.”
